Diesel, gasoline, lubricants and oils are used extensively on farms, and in Alberta there are at least 250 million litres of diesel and gasoline storage. Due to increasing costs, safety concerns, and the environmental risks of spills and leaks associated with handling and storing fuel on the farm, many agricultural producers are looking to upgrade their fuel storage systems. At present, the Alberta Fire Code (AFC) governs the storage and handling of petroleum products. Although Alberta producers are exempt from the AFC, the Farm Fuel Storage & Handling manual uses its standards as guidelines for producers to follow when planning for storage and handling of fuel on their farms.
