| This ecoregion forms part of the shortgrass prairie of the Great Plains of North America. The total resource area approaches four million hectares, just about six percent of the province’s total land mass. Mean summer and winter temperatures are higher than other areas of the province. Moisture deficits in late summer are typical due to low precipitation (mean average 250 - 350 mm) and high evapotranspiration. Parent materials range from loamy lacustrine sediments to hummock eolian deposits. Soil development is dominantly Brown Chernozemic although significant areas of Solonetzic soils are found in the central part of this ecoregion.
