The Fescue Grassland Ecoregion | |

 | This ecoregion lies in the chinook belt of southwestern Alberta along the face of the Rocky Mountain foothills. It covers just over 1.3 million hectares or about two percent of the total area in the province region. The climate is characterized as mild due to the moderating chinook conditions. The mean summer temperature is 14 degrees Celsius and precipitation ranges from 400 - 450 mm annually. Intermittent sloughs, ponds and streams provide moisture to some parts of the region, which is otherwise dominated by dry grassland. Underlain by sandstones and shale, the surface is typified by undulating to rolling, loamy glacial till and clayey lacustrine deposits. Soil development is dominantly Black Chernozemic with significant Gleysolic soils in poorly drained depressions.
