Title: AG30SNF: AGRASID Version 3.0 Soil Names File
Description:
Abstract:
The Soil Names File (AG30SNF) contains information on all the soil names currently recognized in Alberta. The version of the Soil Names File provided is current to the date of publishing of AGRASID30. However the file is updated and revised based upon the observations and feedback provided to the Alberta Soils Correlator. The Correlator makes additions and deletions to the file but changes to the database structure are not common. Updated versions of the Alberta Soils Names File (Generation 3) User's Handbook and Soil Correlation Area (SCA) Map of Alberta (2006) are now available in PDF format for viewing or downloading.
Purpose
Describes the characteristics of each soil named within a soil landscape polygon. Explains the background information associated with the New-Symbol Field in the AG30MAS.

Entity and Attribute Information
Detailed_Description:
Entity_Type:
Entity_Type_Label: AG30SNF
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: NEW_SYMBOL: This field contains a concatenated version of the Soil Name Symbol and Soil Variant variables discussed previously. The NEW_SYMBOL is the key field used to join (or link) to the Alberta Basic Soil Evidence File AG30MAS and link to the Soil Layer File (AG30SLF).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: SERIES: Soil series name. The variant is attached if the series is not modal.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: VARIANT: The variant is used to describe soils that are sufficiently different to warrant recognition but do not justify a new soil name due to limited geographic extent. Up to two variants may be associated with each soil name code (Table 4.9 in the AGRASID Version 1.0 Procedures Manual).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: LU: Land Use - N = Native (Ah horizon) and A = Agricultural (Ap horizon)
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: SCA: Soil Correlation Area number. The province is subdivided into 23 areas based upon climate, which in turn determine soil development, vegetation, soil use and management. (Alberta SNF Group 1993)
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: DRAINAGE: Soil drainage class (ECSS 1982). These drainage classes are different from the drainage categories used for data capture in the CAESA project.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: CALCAR: Calcareousness class of the first C horizon delineated. Classes are delineated in the field based on the amount of carbonates expressed as CaCO3 equivalent (ECSS 1982).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: SALINITY: Salinity class of the most saline parent material. (ECSS 1982).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: PM1_TEX: Texture of parent material 1 (usually the first C-horizon or in some cases the first material below the A-horizon) (ECSS 1982).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: PM1_TYP: Genetic origin of the first parent material (ECSS 1982).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: PM2_TEX: Texture of parent material 2 (ECSS 1982).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: PM2_TYP: Genetic origin of the second parent material (ECSS 1982).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: MAS_PM: A unique set of parent material texture codes developed specifically for the CAESA project (Table 4.7 in the AGRASID Version 1.0 Procedures Manual).
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: REPORT: Identifies where a representative soil profile can be found.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: ORDER: Soil Order, for further detail consult the Canadian System of Soil Classification 1998.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: S_GROUP: Soil Subgroup, for further detail consult the Canadian System of Soil Classification 1998.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: G_GROUP: Soil Great Group, for further detail consult the Canadian System of Soil Classification 1998.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: SG: Soil Sub-Group abbreviation (concatenated Sub-Group and Great Group), for further detail consult the Canadian System of Soil Classification 1998.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: SG_MOD: Identifies 'taxonomic' characteristics not recognized at the subgroup level.
(Table 4.8 in the AGRASID Version 1.0 Procedures Manual)
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: CORRNOTE: Specific comments about soil name.
