MPB Mortality Survey Results - Mountain Pine Beetle in Alberta | |

Each spring, the Government of Alberta conducts mountain pine beetle mortality surveys to assess the number of pine beetle larvae that survived the previous winter. Surveyors cut core samples from trees and compare the number of dead versus live beetle larvae under the bark.
The surveys help to set beetle control priorities in Alberta by forecasting mountain pine beetle populations for the coming year.
The surveys do not account for any potential in-flights of beetles from British Columbia, federal mountain parks or heavily infested areas of Alberta.
