On average, southern Alberta receives minimum daily temperatures colder than -30C less than 10 times in a year. The number of days below -30C increases as one goes farther north. Lethbridge CDA receives an average of 5.2 days colder than -30C, including about four days during December and January. In contrast, Cold Lake Airport (about 130 km north of Lloydminster) receives a total of 15.4 days with temperatures colder than -30C.

The distribution shown on this map is very similar to the distribution of January daily mean temperatures. Since January is one of the coldest months of the year in Alberta, the similar pattern is an indication of the strong link between January daily mean temperatures and the number of cold days.
