 | There seems little logic as to why one of Alberta's first coal mine operators should also be one of the nation's largest shorthorn breeders. It all began as an economical way to keep the grass down on mine sites. Soon, however, the cattle themselves became a source of unending interest for Mr. Gallinger. Beginning with purebred imported stock from Scotland in 1932, he eventually developed the largest herd of shorthorns in Canada and established the "Killearn" bloodline as a standard.
