||These are the results of a survey of 42 canola fields July 20, 21, 25 and 26, 2916.|
Canola plants were assessed for the typical bell damage to the flowers. Those fused flowers were dissected in the field or lab to confirm the presence of Swede midge.
Red balloons mean that larvae were present in the damaged fused flowers .
Orange balloons mean that there was damage consistent with Swede midge, but there were no larvae for a positive confirmation of the insect.
Green balloons mean that there were no damaged flowers.
These findings represent very, very low numbers of Swede midge. For example 5 single fused flowers on 100 canola plants or 250 canola racemes.
Thank you to Justina Nibourg for her help in completing this survey.
We are planning to survey again in 2017.
