The ARD Bio-Based Chemicals Program is focused on the development of new, high value-add bio-based chemicals and innovative commercial applications and technology platforms to meet the needs of new or existing markets. The scope of research spans feedstock development, conversion technology and product development, pilot-scale testing, and is followed up by investment of the private sector for commercialization at an industrial scale.

The combined expertise of the program ranging from business development, research and development, engineering and product development to technology innovation helps facilitate commercial opportunities through the supply chain. A network of experts and collaborators are available to assist the industry in realizing success in new growth opportunities.

The program is also a partner in a bio-product processing facility that allows for pre-pilot processing of bio-products and the development of novel technologies. At Agri-Food Discovery Place (AFDP), the goal is to maximize the utilization of crop components through separation and conversion processes and application development.

AFDP has a range of primary processing equipment available for the preparation of grains, pulses, oilseeds, and biomass for additional processing. Milling, size reduction and pressing can range in volumes from bench top to pilot scale. Secondary processing capabilities at AFDP include dry, wet and solvent processing suites. Diversity of equipment inventory allows for research and process optimization. AFDP also has an analytical lab that is equipped with basic analytical instruments, lab supplies, and a few specialty pieces where raw and processed materials can be analyzed on-site.

“The SCI Initiative has been instrumental in providing (CP)2 with the opportunity and knowledge that has enabled the program to connect and network with key cosmetic and personal care industry players.” – Darren Walkey, Business Director, Cereal Protein and Cellulose Program(CP)2, U of A, Edmonton, Alberta
