Mountain pine beetles attack and kill mature pine trees. All species of pine are vulnerable to infestation by beetles.
Pine trees can be distinguished from other trees by their long needles attached to branches in groups of 2-5.
Spruce trees look different than pine trees. Here is how you can tell the difference:
- spruce trees have smaller and pointy needles
- spruce tree needles are only connected to the branch, not to other needles, like pine
The image below shows a comparison between lodgepole pine and white spruce. Mountain pine beetle can attack other species of trees such as spruce, but do so only when pine is no longer available. Mountain pine beetle are unable to reproduce within spruce trees, as a result, attacks are rarely successful.
