Alberta & Canada Industry Overview
The full capacity for the natural sector is under constant evolution and presents a changing landscape in both Alberta and Canada for the companies, products, and services. This means that capturing the full capacity of the industry is a work in progress. Two documents that capture current states have been provided in this section.
  • Alberta NHP Capacity Study 2013
This study endeavored to capture the current state of the Alberta Natural Health Products industry and demonstrated that gaps in information exist for understanding the full extent of this sector in Alberta.
The study estimates that 1,226 people are employed in the Alberta NHP industry and of 49 with reportable revenue information out of 100 organizations, indicates that revenue from available resources for these 49 was $97,558,000. The manufacturing, packagers, R& D and distribution represented largest revenue contributions to sector.

Canadian Baseline Survey: Canadian Consumer Perceptions of Healthy Food, Ingredients and Natural Health products 2013
This baseline survey was conducted for the purpose of assisting Canadian companies in the sector gain a competitive advantage in the Canadian Marketplace. It highlights Canadians perceptions of food and dietary health including:

  • Specific foods/ingredients sought

Ag West Bio with Ipsos Reid completed a second Canadian survey on Canadian Consumer Perceptions of Healthy Food, Ingredients and Natural Health Products in March 2015. Statistics Canada Market Drivers Bio Access Commercialization Centre commissioned Ispos Reid to conduct research to assess Canadian’s perceptions and understanding of genetically engineered/ GMO foods. This survey provides insights that will assist Canadian companies to develop a deeper understanding of:
  • the awareness and attitudes towards GMOs or genetically engineered foods
  • influence of product claims on purchase decisions
  • likelihood of purchase decisions
  • sources of information
