APHL Values
We value safe, proactive and effective pest management as legislated in the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act.

The Pest Surveillance Section of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is opening the new Alberta Plant Health Lab (APHL).

The APHL is located at the Crop Diversification Centre North (Edmonton, Alberta), led by Dr. Jie Feng. The lab provides plant pest diagnosis and expertise to the agricultural industry and will support stakeholders in compliance with the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act.
The lab is open at a limited capacity and is currently accepting priority samples.

Services
The new lab provides accurate diagnosis of both existing and new plant pests to provide regulatory support to target groups.
  • Blackleg
  • Monitoring emerging clubroot pathotypes
  • Fusarium head blight in cereals
  • Ear rot in corn
  • Dutch elm disease
  • Bacteria, fungi and viruses
  • Noxious and prohibited noxious weeds
  • Agricultural insects
  • Other diagnostic services
Who can submit samples?
Diagnostic testing is free-of-charge for:
  • Alberta Agriculture and Forestry
  • Agricultural Fieldmen
  • Applied Research Associations
  • Municipal Pest Management
What the lab will accept
Diagnostic services can be conducted on:
  • Plant tissue
  • Weed specimens
  • Insect specimens
  • Soil samples (100 – 500g) *
*currently not including clubroot soil testing

The lab, and the services we provide, will adapt to meet the needs of our clients, using the most current technologies and information.
