Mean Wind Speed and Prevailing Direction (December, January and February): 1971 to 2000 | |

| | The prevailing wind direction during the winter is from west to east in most of Alberta. An exception is in the far north of Alberta where cold, dry air from the continental polar and arctic air masses blows from the north to south.
Mean wind speed varies from more than 20 km per hour in the southwest corner of Alberta to less than 8 km per hour farther north and in the mountains. Chinook winds along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains have their greatest effect in the southwest corner of the province.
