Degree days below 18°C are used to estimate the energy needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in a building. Annual total degree days below 18°C vary from less than 5,000 in southern Alberta to more than 7,500 in the northern part of the province. Annual total degree days below 18°C increase with both latitude and elevation in Alberta.

The distribution shown on these maps is very similar to the distribution of January daily mean temperatures. Since January is one of the coldest months of the year in Alberta, the similar pattern is an indication of the strong link between January daily mean temperatures and heating degree days.
