| Average January temperature varies from warmer than -10°C in the foothills and Rockies to colder than -24°C in the far north. The strong north-south trend in temperatures due to the effect of latitude is somewhat modified by the effect of the mountains. Warm chinook winds can increase January temperatures by up to 30°C over a short period of time. The effect of chinook winds is greatest in southern Alberta along the foothills.
