Edmonton...Bison, elk, deer and sheep are now included in the National Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Recovery Program agreed to by the governments of Canada and Alberta. The calculation of payment will be the same scale already in use for slaughter cattle.

"The governments of Canada and Alberta have worked together on this recovery program, which I am confident will help meet the needs of the industry," said federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lyle Vanclief. "While we are actively combating the fallout from a single case of BSE with all means at our disposal, our main goal is to have the Canada/U.S. border reopened to all ruminants exports as soon as possible."

Shirley McClellan, Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development says different livestock industries across the province have been affected by this situation.

"Closure of the border has affected the cattle and beef industry the hardest, but other livestock industries are also feeling the squeeze." She adds, "We will continue to work closely with the federal government and industry to determine any additional adjustments to the program."

The National BSE Recovery Program is a short-term national program designed to compensate producers for the detrimental impact border closures have had on domestic cattle prices. Under the program, producers who sell their ruminants for slaughter are entitled to compensation on a sliding scale equal to the difference between a base price and an average weekly market price.

The program will remain in place until there is a reopening of the U.S. border or until funds for the program are exhausted.
