 Electric fencing
In addition to being a cost-effective and efficient tool for pasture management, sheep producers use electric fencing as preventative management tool in reducing livestock predation. These publications and sites explore options for upgrading existing fences and where new fence is being considered. Livestock water
Water is the single most important nutrient for animals. A successful livestock operation requires a good water supply, both in quantity and quality.
  • AARD documents on water for livestock - systems, dugouts, quality, testing and analysis can be found on Ropin' the Web under Ag Engineering - www.agriculture.alberta.ca
  • Water Wells that Last for Generations (DVD) is part of the Farm Water Series publications. It can also be ordered at either: 1-800-292-5697 or at the above on-line site.
Sheep facility planning and plans
For planning a sheep facility Alberta Lamb Producers and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development developed "Setting it Up: Sheep Infrastructure" module. Module contents include: farm planning, regulations, buildings and pens, utilities, feed and water, handling, fencing, manure and dead stock management, plus additional resources.
The module is available from: When planning sheep facilities and handling systems industry partners developed information resources on animal welfare and the humane care of livestock:
  • National Farm Animal Care Council and Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep go to: www.cansheep.ca
  • Alberta Farm Animal Care's goal is to improve animal handling and promote responsible animal care. For information about AFAC and its programs go to: www.afac.ab.ca

There are two useful publications for sheep flock managers: 'Sheep Housing and Equipment Handbook' and 'Hoop Barns for Horses, Sheep, etc' Sheep Handling Equipment
'Handling and Feeding Sheep DVD' (Agdex DVD430/10-2) provides basic considerations and information helpful in planning an efficient handling facility.
