Lethbridge is the site of the next Agronomy Update, taking place January 15-16, 2019. Doon Pauly, agronomy research scientist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) and one of the organizers of the event, provides some of the highlights for both researchers and producers

“The Lethbridge event tends to be heavily on the research side, but we still have lots of the practical ‘what are the current production issues’ and how do we address those,” says Pauly.

Several AF researchers will be making presentations, as well as a few Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) researchers who have been developing results in their research programs.

“We will look back at the year as far as our pest problems, whether they were insects or diseases,” he adds. “We will also look at some of our current production issues. And, with the way the precipitation events happened in the last number of years, herbicide residues are a big concern. Eric Johnson from the University of Saskatchewan will be addressing those. Changes to the regulatory environment means that we may be losing some insecticide seed treatments. Hector Carcamo with AAFC will be presenting strategies for dealing with that.”

Technology is also on the agenda including how unmanned aerial vehicles can be used in agriculture. “Anne Smith with AAFC will be sharing her perspective of how she has used them in research settings in the past and some of the limitations,” says Pauly.

Biostimulants will be addressed in the agronomy section of the update. “We are bringing a researcher from Idaho who has used them in his research program for a number of years. So we will get his perspective of these biostimulants.”

Agronomy Update has been approved for 12 certified crop advisor continuing education units, 11 credits for certified crop protection professionals, and five credits for Alberta pesticide applicator recertification.

“There are several opportunities for various certification holders to get continuing education. We will also have an add-on session to the regular agronomy update that is specific for pesticide recertification.”

Pauly adds that Tom Wolf is also on the agenda. “He is a world class speaker who will be talking about equipment and sprayer technology, as well as pesticide recertification. I really hope people take advantage of that and stick around for that pesticide applicator recertification because it would be worth their while.”
