Program Details

The Wheat Board Money Trust Act was passed in 1926, when certain activities of the Canadian Wheat Board were terminated. The sum of $112,000 was given to the Government of Alberta - Alberta Agriculture - and they established a fund. The interest from this fund was to be used for the furthering of agriculture in Alberta, and promoting cooperatives in the province. Amendments were made to this act several times, so that now the interests of the fund are used for scholarships and bursaries.

The scholarships and bursaries are awarded annually to students taking agriculture-related subjects and attending Lakeland College, Olds College and Lethbridge College. It also provides scholarship funds to students in the seven 4-H regions. An annual meeting is held in October to allocate funds for scholarships and bursaries to students of the three colleges and 4-H club members from the seven regions.

For 2011 calendar year, each of the three colleges receives $1,000 to award either one scholarship or bursary to a student, and 4-H Foundation of Alberta receives $2,000 to award two scholarships of $1,000 each to the seven 4-H regions. Subject to change.
