Licence Details

A person must be licenced under the Meat Inspection Act and the Meat Inspection Regulation in order to operate an abattoir in Alberta. The licensed provincial abattoirs provide market access by authorizing the slaughter of livestock in the facility and the production of safe and wholesome meat products for sale in Alberta.

Before issuing a licence, prospective abattoirs must meet certain criteria. The facilities must meet the requirements of legislation as laid out in the Meat Inspection Act, the Meat Inspection Regulation and the Meat Facility Standards.

Abattoirs are subject to two partial audits and one full system audit annually.

The cost of an abattoir licence is $100.00 and is renewable every five years on December 31.

A person may apply to Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development to license and operate an abattoir.
