Before issuing a licence, prospective abattoirs must meet certain criteria. The facilities must meet the requirements of legislation as laid out in the Meat Inspection Act, the Meat Inspection Regulation and the Meat Facility Standards. Abattoirs are subject to two partial audits and one full system audit annually. The cost of an abattoir licence is $100.00 and is renewable every five years on December 31. A person may apply to Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development to license and operate an abattoir.
