Program Details
 
 
  The Workforce Development Program provides assistance to address specific workforce issues in agricultural production and agri-processing sectors. Financial assistance is provided to assist Alberta agri-business managers to:
  • recruit workers outside of Alberta; and
  • assess and adopt technologies and processes which will increase worker productivity.
Projects must be completed by February 26, 2010.

Claims must be filed by March 15, 2010.

Recruitment Grant Terms and Conditions

The Recruitment Grant provides travel assistance for employers to recruit workers elsewhere in Canada or from other countries in order to address workforce stability.
  • Eligible Applicants: Agri-processing companies and agri-industry associations that are registered and active on the Alberta Corporate Registry and are recruiting on behalf of the agriculture and food industry.
  • Eligible Activities: Participation in domestic job fairs outside of Alberta or recruiting missions internationally to interview and select workers.
  • Eligible Expenses: Travel expenses for eligible activities based on economy air fare and per diem rates of $400 per person per day in foreign countries and $200 per person per day in Canada. Contact Agriculture and Rural Development (“ARD”) Recruitment Program Manager for details.
  • Payment: 50 percent of eligible expenses incurred by a successful applicant in completing the approved project to a maximum of $25,000 per applicant in a fiscal year (April to March).
  • Reporting Requirements: To be eligible to receive payment upon the completion of the approved project, a successful applicant must submit a one page report indicating recruitment trip accomplishments, a completed Declaration of Eligible Expenses, proof of payment, documentation detailing flight departure and arrival dates and times, and any other information requested by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (the “Minister”).
Workforce Productivity Improvement Grant Terms and Conditions

The Workforce Productivity Improvement Grant provides assistance to agri-processing companies to assess and adopt new technologies and processes that improve worker productivity in order to stay competitive and better utilize workers.
  • Eligible Applicants: Agri-processing companies that are registered and active on the Alberta Corporate Registry.
  • Eligible Activities:
    1. Lean manufacturing expertise to identify and provide coaching on process improvements; or
    2. food processing engineering expertise to identify process improvements, technology and automation options and analyze costs and productivity impacts.
  • Eligible Expenses: Consulting fees paid to a third-party consultant to complete the eligible activities. Contact an ARD Development Officer for details.
  • Payment: 80 percent of eligible expenses incurred by a successful applicant in completing the approved project to a maximum of $25,000 per applicant in a fiscal year (April to March).
  • Reporting Requirements: To be eligible to receive payment upon the completion of an approved project, a successful applicant must submit a copy of the consultant’s completed report, a report prepared by the project manager outlining the results of the project, a completed Declaration of Eligible Expenses, proof of payment, and any other information requested by the Minister.
