Program Details

Recognizing that wildfire costs can be extremely prohibitive, the Minister of Sustainable Resource Development (SRD), in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), developed a wildfire cost assessment review process. Under this process, the Farmers' Advocate Office (FAO) conducts an investigation and chairs a 3-person Wildfire Cost Assessment Committee. The Minister of ARD and the Minister of SRD appoint the other two members of the panel. If, in the opinion of the committee, paying the SRD invoice would cause undue financial hardship, it may make recommendation to the Minister of SRD to forgive a portion or all of the wildfire costs. The panel may recommend the invoiced amount remains as originally billed.

The Wildfire Cost Assessment Committee cannot determine if the billing was justified or advocate for an individual other than on the basis of ability to pay or financial hardship.
