Licence Details:

Dairy production and processing in Alberta requires licensing or permitting, facility inspection and product testing. Every dairy producer must hold a Dairy Producer licence issued under the Dairy Industry Act or the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act.

Each dairy processor, who processes 50 litres or more of dairy product on any given day, must hold the appropriate licence issued under the Dairy Industry Act or the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act. Individuals that process less than 50 litres of dairy product on any given day are currently permitted by Alberta Health Services under the Public Health Act (Alberta).

Inspectors from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry inspect dairy farms and dairy processing operations including buildings, land, milk transport vehicles, and laboratories for testing dairy products, to ensure that they meet the requirements of the Dairy Industry Act and the regulations.

For more information, see the Dairy Industry Act and its regulations.

For an application for producer or processor licence for cow’s milk please contact Alberta Milk at 780-577-3314 or if you are going to produce or process milk from any other species of dairy animal please contact Agriculture and Forestry at 403-755-1474 or bruce.hamblin@gov.ab.ca.
