The co-operatives are incorporated and regulated by Rural Utilities under the provisions of the Rural Utilities Act. There are 151 co-operatives throughout the province, many formed in the 1960's and 1970's to provide water service to their immediate area. Corporate filing information such as incorporations, annual returns, by-law changes are submitted to Rural Utilities for review, approval and registration.
The water co-operatives also work closely with their Federation of Water Co-operatives for advisory and technical assistance. Alberta Environment and Parks is involved in water quality and water licensing issues.
