The co-operatives are incorporated and regulated by the Rural Utilities Division under the provisions of the Rural Utilities Act. There are 151 co-operatives throughout the province, many formed in the 1960's and 1970's to provide water service to their immediate area. Corporate filing information such as incorporations, annual returns, by-law changes are submitted to the Rural Utilities Division for review, approval and registration.
The water co-operatives also work closely with their Federation of Water Co-operatives and the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) for advisory and technical assistance. Grant assistance for the development of water systems may be available through PFRA's Rural Water Development Program. Alberta Environment is involved in water quality and water licensing issues.
