Call of the Land is a five day-a-week, 9-minute agricultural radio program produced by Alberta Agriculture. This information and extension program is aired on 27 Alberta radio stations. For over 50 years Call of the Land has broadcast during the noon hour to a province wide network of stations. It now reaches a daily audience of over 110,000. Aimed at rural Albertans, stories keep the agricultural community current on the latest agricultural technologies, research findings, production methods and marketing trends, as well as government programs and policies. Red Deer County is hosting an information session on opportunities to reduce energy costs in your farm or business, featuring Toso Bozic from Alberta Agriculture. It’s taking place November 23 at noon at the Red Deer County Office.
The Freehold Mineral Owners are holding an information seminar for owners of subsurface oil and gas rights entitled Estate Planning for Freehold Owners. It’s taking place November 23 at Symons Valley United Church in Calgary. For more information, call 403-245-4438, or go to www.fhoa.ca.
Farm Credit Canada is hosting four Let’s Talk About Agriculture and the Economy sessions this month, looking at such tings as the link between commodity markets, energy markets, and the Canadian dollar. Speaker J.P. Gervais will give his outlook for the Canadian economy and the impact on agriculture. Meetings are being held at the following locations—November 23 at the Saskatoon Lake Hall at Wembley, the 24th at the Dunvegan Inn in Fairview, the 25th at the Hawk Hills Community Centre, and also on the 25th at the Knights of Columbus hall in Falher. The event is free and is open to all producers, but you are asked to register. The Marketing Caravan is coming to Airdrie on November 24. This is a one-day workshop on how to understand your customers, reach them through the media and build a business to be proud of. For more information or to register, contact Becky Lipton at 780-271-1116.
The annual general meeting for the Sexsmith Co-op Seed Cleaning Plant is November 24 at the Sexsmith Curling Rink. The meeting itself starts at 9 a.m., but there is a breakfast getting underway at 8:00 a.m.
The North Peace Applied Research Association is hosting two Water Quality workshops on November 24, 10:30 a.m. at the Keg River Community Hall, and then at 7 p.m. at the Warrensville Hall. Alberta Agriculture, Growing Forward and the Alberta Farm Fresh Producers Association are hosting a series of workshops this fall and winter to help demystify what it means to sell into local markets. The Explore…Local Foods, Local Markets workshop is being held in four locations: Taber on November 26, Rycroft on December 2, Red Deer on January 20, and Vegreville on January 27. Alberta Barley Commission regional meetings continue next week. Meetings are as follows: Monday at the Lacombe Memorial Centre starting at 9:30 a.m. and December 2 at Luigi’s Pizza & Steakhouse in Lethbridge, getting underway at 6 p.m. For more information, go to www.albertabarley.com.
Alberta Canola Producers Commission regional meetings continue next week as well. Meetings are as follows: Monday at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, starting at 9 a.m.; Tuesday at the Delia Community Hall, starting at 9 a.m.; Wednesday at the Lethbridge Lodge, starting at 9 a.m.; and Thursday at the Kitscoty Community Hall, starting at 9 a.m. December meetings are as follows: the 2nd at the Manning Legion Hall, starting at 9:30 a.m.; the 3rd at the ACFA Hall in Falher, also starting at 9:30 a.m., and the Civic Centre in Sexsmith on the 4th, starting at 8:30 a.m. For all the details, go to www.canola.ab.ca/events.
Alberta Pulse Grower meetings continue next month, and some are in conjunction with either the barley growers or canola growers. Meetings are as follows: December 4 at the Sexsmith Civic Centre, and the 7th at Luigi’s in Taber.
Red Deer County presents a Working Well workshop on November 30 at the Ridgewood Community Centre. On the agenda—groundwater and how it works, water quality and quantity testing, well protection, basic well maintenance, and how to water sample. There’s a four-day Grain Marketing course starting November 30 in Leduc. This basic level course of four consecutive days of classroom sessions will look at such things as basis, futures, options, contracts, and strategies for grain marketing.
