Alberta Johne's Disease Control Program: Veterinary Re-accreditation | |

The Food Safety Division of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development in conjunction with the Alberta Johne’s Working Group designed and established a provincial veterinary accreditation program for veterinary practitioners in August 2001. Veterinary practitioners are required to obtain accreditation before they can participate in the Voluntary Johne’s Herd Status Program. Accreditation is valid for three years.
Several accreditation training sessions were organized across Alberta in 2001, 2002 and 2003. During the fall of 2004, a re-accreditation process was developed for those veterinarians whose accreditation status expired. Veterinary re-accreditation does not require any additional classroom training. Veterinarians are required to review the veterinarian accreditation manual and answer a list of certification questions. Thirty-eight Alberta veterinarians were re-accredited for another three years. Currently, Alberta has 114 accredited veterinarians for Voluntary Johne’s Herd Status Program.
