Agrivantage was created as a result of a partnership between Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and the Agriculture and Food Council.

Ag Summit is a public consultation process that grew out of a need for Alberta’s agriculture and food industry to meet the challenges of today’s global market place. It involved two phases. Phase one involved extensive consultations with industry, government and other stakeholders to identify issues and challenges. Outcomes from phase one were detailed in a summary document called the Catalyst for Growth, Framework for Change.

Agrivantage began to oversee phase two of the Ag Summit process in January 2001. During this final phase, groups of volunteers from industry, called Action Teams, studied and discussed issues identified in Phase I and developed strategies to address them. In the spring of 2002, each Action Team completed a report with recommendations directed to government and industry.

Agrivantage concluded the Ag Summit process with the presentation of its report to the Minister of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and the Chair of the Agriculture and Food Council.

The Agrivantage report dated November 2003, Building Tomorrow Together (83 pgs. 1,339K PDF), addresses overarching issues facing the agri-food industry.

Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and the Agriculture and Food Council will continue to communicate and collaborate as each organization moves forward with its process for following-up on both the Action Team and Agrivantage recommendations.
