Labels must give useful information in a clear format. Food shoppers will be able to make better informed, healthier choices as the result of new EU food labelling rules approved by MEPs. Labels will have to spell out a food's energy content as well as fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugar, protein and salt levels, in a way that makes them easy for consumers to read.

The draft regulation strengthens and clarifies provisions for foods intended for vulnerable groups of the population who need particular protection – namely infants and children up to three years old, and people with specific medical conditions, such as cancer patients or individuals with metabolism disorders.
