Livestock dealers purchase feeder lambs from individual producers and arrange for sales and trucking to feedlots. Dealers can usually arrange more economical trucking than individual producers and may be able to sort lambs from several producers into groups to suit various buyers. They may also have contacts with feedlots outside of Alberta and be able to provide an alternative market when Alberta feedlots are full.

To understand the price offered by a livestock dealer, producers should ask whether a "pencil shrink" will be subtracted at the delivery point. Pencil shrink is the percentage of the gross animal weight that is deducted to arrive at a sale weight. When quoting a price per pound, a dealer may be stating the price per pound as weighed at the delivery point, or they may be referring to the weight at the delivery point minus a percentage for shrink, to try to approximate what the lambs will weigh when they reach their destination. Be certain how the final price will be calculated before selling to a livestock dealer.
