,
Selling directly to a feedlot may be the best alternative if there are no large feeder lamb auctions within a reasonable distance of your sheep operation. A producer can sell directly to a feedlot by making individual sale arrangements with the feedlot owner. Developing a good relationship with a feedlot will benefit the feedlot and will provide the producer with a long-term market for his lambs.
Deciding which feedlot will give the highest returns for lambs requires looking at more than just the offered price. The cost of trucking must be factored in even if the producer is providing the trucking. Furthermore, if the lambs are to be sold based on their weight upon arrival, the greater the distance they are shipped, the less they will weigh when they arrive.
