This ecoregion represents a band in the southern interior of Alberta, running northward from the U.S. border, and curving into Saskatchewan to the east of Red Deer. The total resource area is 3.4 million hectares or about 5% of the province’s land base. The region is correlated with semi-arid moisture conditions, warm summers (mean 15.5 degrees Celsius) and winters and low to moderate precipitation (350 - 400 mm annually). Soil types are Dark Brown Chernozemic or Solonetzic associated with sandy to clayey lacustrine deposits and developed under prairie grassland influences.
