The term "relief well" is used to describe a well that is used to relieve pressure from an aquifer. In cases, when artesian pressure is sufficient to allow water to move to the surface, relief wells are an alternative. If the aquifer is large, a series of relief wells is required. Relief wells in series may be interconnected and outletted by a shallow drainage system.
