This webpage provides information on the National CWD Voluntary Herd Certification Program as well as a list of Alberta domestic cervid producers who participate in that program and their current status.

Program Documents:
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, with input from stakeholders, sets the National Standards for the Chronic Wasting Disease Voluntary Herd Certification Program. Based on these standards, administrators develop a Manual of Procedures to implement the Voluntary Herd Certification Program within their jurisdiction.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is currently the Administrator of the program for Alberta cervid producers. The following documents are available for Alberta cervid producers who wish to enrol in the program.

Alberta’s Standard Operating Procedures for the CWD Voluntary Herd Certification Program provide a detailed set of requirements for producers as well as the administrative operating procedures for the administrator to follow. This provides clarity for producers in terms of what is expected and how the administrator will implement the program, including advancement criteria, timelines, and approaches to suspensions and cancellations.

Producers wishing to apply can do so using Form 1 Application for Enrolment

Additional forms used within the program:
Form 3 – Annual Inspection
Form 4 – Annual Inventory
Form 5 – Site Plan
Form 6 – Perimeter Fence Attestation
Form 7- Transportation of Vehicle Report
Form 8 – Annual Escape/Intrusion Report

If you need access to any of the above forms please contact Norma Pronteau.

Alberta has also produced a Quick Reference Guide for Producers to more conveniently outline the annual requirements for producers.

The established anniversary dates for the program are:

  • December 31 - "elk only" herds,
  • December 31 - "combined elk and deer" herds, and
  • March 31 - "deer only" herds
