Drechslera spp.

Disease description
Drechslera poae; also D. dictyoides - leafblight of blue grasses and fescues.
Bipolaris sorokiniana
- leaf spot of most grasses.
D. erythrospila
- red leaf spot of bent grasses. Found in all regions.
Important on Kentucky blue grass on west coast. B.sorokiniana may cause severe seedling blight on sand-based golf greens.

Predisposing factors
  • susceptible cultivars
  • close mowing
  • excessive nitrogren
  • D. poae leaf spotting is favored by wet periods in spring and fall, and excessive irrigation foot rot and melting-out develop after the leaf spot symptoms
Cultural control
Raise height of cut, avoid excessive nitrogen and irrigation, use resistant Kentucky blue grass cultivars such as Merion, Bristol, Nugget, Touchdown.
