 | Marasmius oreades
Disease description
Ribbons or complete rings of dark green grass with associated bare areas. Tan-colored fruits (toadstools) often found in rings in summer and/or fall. White fungal mycelium with a musty odor in the soil under the ring when active.
Predisposing factors
- more noticeable and damaging in drier locations and light soils, e.g. in lawns on boulevards, cemeteries, golf fairways
- not uncommon in native or sown grassland from which domestic lawn soil is often obtained
- domestic lawns between 5 and 20 years old are more commonly affected
Cultural Control
Apply nitrogenous fertilizer, aerate and irrigate well to mask symptoms. Use "spike and soak" or "disturbance with fumigation" or "complete soil excavation with fumigation" methods. Divide lawn into sections with paths or borders. Rings will grow out against these or against each other and disappear at points of contact. Use mutual inhibition method where rings are abundant. |
