Intensive poultry production doesn't have to be situated on expensive land. The primary considerations are water availability and quality and good drainage. Some regions of the Province have ground water that is unsuitable for poultry. Some regions have water which is very high in sodium or magnesium salts. Other factors to consider when selecting a site would be:
1. proximity to market
2. proximity to feed supplies
3. proximity to other poultry farms (for reasons of biosecurity)
4. room for expansion
5. access to land for manure application
6. business climate of the county or municipal district - taxation policies, etc.
The Environmental Practices and Livestock Welfare Branch lead the Department's initiatives on nutrient management, livestock welfare and farm environmental practices.
