| | In 2001, the Potato Program at the Crop Diversification Centre South conducted a fresh market cultivar demonstration trial in Brooks, AB. Forty-six potato varieties were planted in the demonstration trial, including red-skinned, yellow-skinned, white-skinned and russet varieties. One row (20 to 25 hills) of each variety was planted using 12 inch spacing between hills and 36 inch spacing between rows.
Several hills of each variety were dug for observation at the field day, July 31. The remaining potatoes were harvested in late August and graded for relative yield and tuber size. Tubers less than 1 7/8 inches in diameter were classed as small, tubers between 1 7/8 and 3 1/2 inches in diameter were classed as marketable and those over 3 1/2 inches in diameter were classed as oversize or jumbo. Potatoes were also assessed after boiling and baking by our culinary lab in July and again in October.
This trial report includes table summarizing the potato variety descriptions, a list of commercial sources of seed for the trial, graphs of relative yield, and size categories of tubers, as well results from the culinary analyses. Please keep in mind that this data was generated as part of a demonstration and no replication of the work was performed. The data is intended to give growers an idea of how various cultivars compare under irrigated conditions in southern Alberta.
