Recommendation: recommended at Brooks, only satisfactory growth at Edmonton, Lacombe, Bowden and Coaldale 1, not recommended at Grande Prairie or Calgary. Most plants died back to snowline each year in most locations. Those which survived and became more mature sustained only minor tipkill. Introduced by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Morden, MB.

Form:
weeping shade tree.
Features:
glossy green leaves, yellow in fall, golden stem color.
Culture:
prefers adequately moist conditions.

Recommendation: recommended at Edmonton, Lacombe, Bowden and Brooks, only satisfactory growth at Calgary and Coaldale 1, basal suckering gives tree a shrubby, untidy appearance, good for shelterbelts with moist conditions.

Form:
large, sprawling, often a multi-stemmed shrub.
Features:
green leaves.
Culture:
sensitive to high pH soils, leaves subject to gall forming insects.

Recommendation: recommended at Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Bowden and Brooks, satisfactory growth at Lacombe, Calgary and Coaldale 1, heavy pruning required to keep tree in bounds, winter damage most years in Calgary.

Form:
broad oval, low headed, often a multi-stemmed tree.
Features:
green leaves, white underneath, bright yellow stems.
Culture:
prefers moist soils, prune in summer or fall, full sun, pH adaptable.

Recommendation: rated satisfactory in Fairview where plants survived with heavy weed infestation and mechanical damage for three years when they were finally lost and in Edmonton where the plants suffered rust on leaves. In Coaldale the plants were poor due to saline soils. In Calgary and Brooks, the plants survived but steadily declined each year. Selected by Beaverlodge Nurseries, Beaverlodge, AB.

Form:
dwarf, trailing shrub.
Features:
glossy green leaves.
Culture:
ground hugging willow with big broad leaves. difficult to maintain in areas with dandelion problems.

Recommendation: planted in trial in 2002. Recommended only at Calgary. Plants failed during the second season at Red Deer, Fairview and Coaldale and after the third season in Brooks.

round, sprawling shrub.
Features:
variegated green, pink and white foliage.
Culture:
best in partial shade. Regular pruning is desired for shape and to remove dieback.

Recommendation: planted in trial in 2003. Recommended at Edmonton, Fairview, Red Deer, and Brooks and satisfactory at Calgary where three surviving plants suffered a lot of dieback. Plants failed after the second season at Coaldale.
Trial Average:
Height: 2.7 m.; Spread: 1.4 m.
Form:
large upright deciduous shrub.
Features:
rounded, hairy, silver-blue foliage. Scruffy upright columnar form.
Culture:
use as unique specimen or accent. Annual pruning required to remove winter dieback.
