Recommendation: recommended at most locations, except satisfactory at Calgary and failed at Coaldale 1, some winter injury occurs in most years.
Trial Average:
Height: 110 cm; Spread: 120 cm
Form:
upright, dense shrub.
Features:
dark, glossy green leaves, red-purple in fall, flat clusters of white flowers in June.
Culture:
prefers well-drained soil, but tolerates many soil conditions, full sun or part shade, produces suckers.

Recommendation: planted in trial 2004. Highly recommended at Calgary, recommended at Edmonton, Lethbridge and Brooks. Lethbridge has very high ratings but only two plants survived. Satisfactory at red Deer and not recommended at Fairview where only one struggling plant remained.
Trial Average:
Height:108 cm.; Spread: 90 cm.
Form:
rounded compact shrub.
Features:
glossy green foliage. White flowers cover plant in spring. Rich blue berries later in summer.
Culture:
full-sun to shade, most soil types. Low hedge or foundation planting.

upright mounding shrub.
Features:
new red foliage - later green veins appear on red surface giving feather-like design. Good red fall color.
Culture:
full-sun to partial shade.

Wayfaring Tree



Recommendation: recommended at Edmonton, Lacombe, Bowden and Brooks, satisfactory growth at Grande Prairie and Coaldale 1, did not survive transplanting in Calgary.

Form:
coarse, upright, rounded shrub.
Features:
dark gray-green leaves, purple-red in the fall, flat clusters of white flowers in June.
Culture:
prefers loamy, well-drained soil but tolerates dry conditions, sun or part shade.

Recommendation: highly recommended in Calgary, Brooks and Coaldale. Satisfactory in Edmonton and Red Deer and failed in Fairview. Introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum.

Form:
dense, globe-shaped shrub.
Features:
thick, leathery, dark green-gray leaves, large, cream colored flower clusters.
Culture:
does well in saline areas.

Recommendation: recommended at Edmonton, Bowden and Brooks, not recommended at Grande Prairie and Calgary, failed at Coaldale 1. Plants did not set fruit in northern test locations.

Form:
compact, rounded shrub.
Features:
dark green leaves, yellow in fall, white flowers in early spring, showy fruit which last throughout winter. Culture: tolerates a wide range of soils, pH adaptable, full sun.

Recommendation: recommended at Bowden, Brooks and Calgary, satisfactory at Edmonton and Red Deer, failed at Grande Prairie. Plants have not flowered at the northern locations.

Form:
upright, rounded shrub.
Features:
green leaves, yellow in fall, abundant ball shaped flower clusters in early spring, flowers are sterile. Culture: adapts to a wide range of soil types and pH's, moist soils, partial shade or full sun.

Recommendation: Introduced by the USDA. Satisfactory only at all sites except Edmonton where it was not recommended. Edmonton site had heavy weed competition which may have caused the poor results. Plants wintered at most sites but were slow and unimpressive.

Height: 0.9 m; Spread: 0.6 m
Form:
globe-shaped shrub.
Features:
velvety maroon leaves maturing to deep green with purple tinge, flowers white with purple hue, red fruit. Good red fall color.
Culture:
good for screen or shrub border.

Recommendation: recommended at all locations, except growth was only satisfactory at Bowden and not recommended at Calgary. Plants have seldom set fruit at the northern locations.

Form:
dense, compact, rounded shrub.
Features:
green leaves, deep red in fall, flat clusters of white flowers, edible, bright red fruit.
Culture:
prefers moist, well-drained soil, but will tolerate a wide range, excessive water stress causes rapid decline in plant, full sun or partial shade.

Features:
glossy deep green leaves.
