The thirteen irrigation districts in southern Alberta continue to convert their water delivery infrastructure from open channel canals to buried pipelines. Since 1999, the districts have collectively installed over 2,000 kilometres of pipelines which now represents 50% of their total delivery system. This conversion to pipelines reduces water loss from evaporation and seepage, resulting in an increase in water delivery efficiency.
