 The Home Study Concept

The home study program of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development offers a variety of agriculture-related courses and software for study and use at home including;

Livestock Production Home Study Courses

Many people are unable to attend courses either because the schedules don't fit theirs or they don't have time for regular studies. With this in mind, home study has developed courses and computer software that you can purchase any time of the year and work on at your own convenience.

There are no prerequisites for any of the courses.

Home Study Users

These resources are used by farmers, farm employees, agribusinesses, agricultural consultants and educational institutions on either an individual or group basis.

Grading and Evaluation

Students of home study do not send in lessons for marking or grading. Many courses offer exercises or quizzes with answers, enabling students to evaluate their progress. There are optional final exams for some courses. Exams can be returned to home study for marking. If the student passes the exam, he or she receives a certificate. All courses are non-credit except for Weed Management which offers credits toward recertification for pesticide applicators and certified crop advisors.

Course Materials

When you purchase a home study course, you usually receive the following:

  • A binder with well-illustrated course material
  • Learning objectives
  • Suggestions for various study strategies
  • Worksheets that help to apply learning
  • Supplemental material when necessary
Course Writers

Home study courses are written by specialists in the field and updated as needed. The objective is to provide current technical information to meet the needs of learners with various levels of knowledge and experience. The material is straightforward and easy to understand.
