Treating Cattle Chute Side
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of beef cattle anatomy & physiology
- Demonstrate knowledge of feedlot diseases, parasites & disorders
- Interpret drug labels, handle & administer treatments
- Identify sick or problem cattle
- Assess animals to carryout feedlot treatment protocol
- Assist cows at calving
- Humanely euthanize an animal
- Assess animal to determine cause of sickness & death
Operating & Servicing Equipment & Facilities
- Follow safe farm vehicle driving regulations
- Safely operate, maintain & service:
- farm tractors
- trucks & tractors with equipment in tow
- two axle farm truck
- three axle farm truck
- chainsaw
- augers & conveyors
- high pressure washer
- front-end loaders
- skid steer loader
- industrial type wheel loaders
- manure spreader
- ATV
- Safely use basic hand/shop tools
- Use corral & fence mending tools to repair & maintain
- Bed up pens & maintain bedding
- Practice good house keeping
Feeding Cattle
- Demonstrate knowledge of the feeding management plan
- Carryout the feeding protocol/routine
- Operate feed wagon/truck & perform routine maintenance
- Operate platform scales (legal type)
- Receive feedstuffs into feed system & monitor feed inventory
- Operate feedmilling equipment to process feed rations
- Perform routine feedmill service or maintenance
Processing & Handling Cattle
- Know basic principles of cattle behavior
- Handle normal & sick cattle
- Safely operate, maintain & service handling equipment
- Operate a scale (digital & manual) to weigh cattle
- Mark cattle for identification
- Perform cattle receiving procedures
- Carryout the feedlot processing protocol
- Know basics of industry cattle types & beef marketing components
- Perform cattle shipping & loading procedures
- Perform castration
- Know basics of current beef quality assurance programs and beef food safety issues
- Dehorn cattle
- Implant cattle with growth stimulants
- Hot iron brand cattle & read brand markings
Pen Checking
- Correctly move amongst cattle & check for signs of sickness & disorder
- Pull cattle from pens
- Inspect feedbunks and pen structures for damage & correct or report
- Check feed in bunks & report apparent problems
- Ensure operation of animal waterers
- Ride & handle a horse & provide basic care
Harvest, Handle and Store Forage Crops - Optional
- Safely operate and maintain:
- hay cutting equipment & forage harvester
- square baler (~40kg) or round baler
- hay rake/windrow inverter
- silage dump wagon & silage bagger
- big bale wrapper
- silo blower
- forage additive applicator
- bale collector
- Prepare forage crop storage facilities
- Store forage harvesting equipment
- Pack bunker silage using a tractor
