Managing Milking and Sanitation
- Supervise the milking routine
- Monitor & manage the milking equipment system for proper operation

- Supervise the farm facilities cleaning & waste management program
Managing Calf-Rearing
- Develop a feeding program & supervise calf feeding (0-3 months)
- Operate & manage a preventative health program for calves
- Monitor calf health, detect sickness, disorders & take action
Managing Cattle Breeding
- Judge & assess cattle performance & select animals for culling
- Judge & select cows & bulls for mating
- Operate the herd breeding program
- Perform AI and manage the on-farm storage of semen
- Operate the DHI program in the herd
Feeding The Herd
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of cattle nutrition
- Take a feed sample for nutrient analysis & interpret lab results
- Perform a condition scoring on a cow
- Manage a program & supervise the feeding of replacement cattle (6 months calving)
- Supervise the feeding program & manage the feeding of the milking herd
- Manage the pasture grazing of cattle
- Supervise & manage the operation of feeding equipment
General Supervising
- Demonstrate use of decision making & problem solving techniques
- Demonstrate effective verbal & written communication for records, staff & public
- Demonstrate supervisor’s time management competence
- Plan & manage farm staff work schedule
- Supervise farm staff work activities
- Conduct training of farm staff
- Conduct production meetings
Managing Cattle Health
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of cattle anatomy & physiology
- Develop a herd health & vaccination program
- Read, interpret & demonstrate basic knowledge of the dairy code of practice
- Demonstrate knowledge of common respiratory diseases, disorders & treat suspected cases
- Demonstrate knowledge of common digestive diseases, disorders & treat suspected cases
- Demonstrate knowledge of common physical diseases, disorders & treat where possible
- Develop & manage a control program for external & internal parasites
- Manage dry cow health & feeding
- Establish & maintain a calving & maternity area
- Assess lab testing options to diagnose health problems & take proper samples
- Set up & maintain a multi-purpose cow history record system
- Manage the calving program & assist cows while calving
- Develop & manage a mastitis control program
- Diagnose minor problems & carry out basic hoof trimming & care
Dairy Products Marketing
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of milk marketing, dairy policy & pricing
- Manage the herd’s production quota requirements
- Manage the marketing of cattle.
