The Field Crop Development Centre carries out cereal breeding and development programs focused on feed barley (2-row, 6-row, and hulless), 2-row malting barley, spring and winter triticale, and winter wheat.

The FCDC main office and laboratory building is situated in downtown Lacombe, Alberta. The research farm and J.H. Helm Research Centre are located one kilometer south of town on Highway 2A, adjacent to the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research Centre.

The FCDC land base is approximately 390 acres, developed for field plot research. The farm has facilities for equipment service and storage, seeding cleaning and drying, seed storage, and a growth facility.
