| | The current situation in the agriculture sector has lead many producers to start looking at different options that might yield them better returns. This may involve an exit from one production system and re-entry into something completely different or may simply involve some diversification.
Mushroom production is one area that people are taking a look at. As with all specialty crops, the key is to do good, sound market research, to evaluate the current state of the market and the room for growth or expansion. Producers considering any diversification need to look at the cost of production of their new crop idea, and seriously assess whether they can make it work. If the market won’t support growth, then it doesn’t matter if you can grow it, because you won’t be able to sell it and make a profit.
