| | An important component of rural development is the numerous projects and initiatives that benefit rural Alberta communities and citizens. Some key projects that the Ministry promotes and supports are listed below.
Rural Connectivity - Access to high-speed broadband allows individuals, communities, and businesses to access markets, information and applications from around the world. While access to the Internet is becoming more common in Alberta, many rural communities and rural residents have yet to enjoy the benefits of true high-speed broadband. The Ministry works with other involved stakeholders to seek out ways for rural Albertans to access affordable high-speed broadband.
Business Vitality Initiative (BVI) - This program helps communities to assess their capacity to work with and support entrepreneurs, and to foster small business growth. See the Rural Development Projects map for communities involved.
First Impressions Community Exchange (FICE) - This program is being piloted in 2008 and 2009 in smaller communities across the province. Delivered in partnership with Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, the program involves two municipalities sending small teams of volunteers to each others communities. This exchange helps communities learn about their strengths and shortcomings as seen through the eyes of a first time visitor. See the Rural Development Projects map for the communities involved in the 2008 pilot.
Cross Government Collaboration - Rural issues extend across multiple government ministries and levels of government. The Assistant Deputy Minister's Committee on Rural Development coordinates rural development initiatives within the Alberta government.
Rural Team Alberta (RTAB) - RTAB is a network of federal, provincial and non-government agencies that influences and promotes rural programs and policy. The team meets throughout the year to share information and ideas on rural opportunities and issues.
