.
Troels and Laurie Hansen plan to take their 1,600-acre grain farm to the next level. They want to make it a self-sustaining canola operation that will provide feed and fuel for their farm. The Hansen’s plan is to sell value-added products off the farm and as a future goal, they envision turning their canola into biodiesel to run their machinery.
Plan for Growth:
- Process their canola on-farm using a cold crush method.
- Purchase a compact oil crusher that will process all of their canola on the farm.
- Use meal from canola to feed their 150 cattle and 600 feeder operation.
- Market meal to a local feed mill.
- Enter new markets with biodiesel.
The Farm Renewal-Makeover Scholarship will assist LTH Farms in processing all of their canola on the farm, as well as for the production of the oil for biodiesel as the technology becomes feasible.
