Starting a new year can be an exciting time - reflecting on the past and building optimism for the future.

On the home stretch: your feedback for final Recommendations
Following the Industry Governance Review Working Session on November 23, 2007, the Working Group collated the tremendous amount of input that was provided and created draft Recommendations. In order to have your feedback incorporated into the final version of these draft Recommendations, Marketing Council encourages you to send your suggestions on or before March 1, 2008 to Freda.Molenkamp-Oudman@gov.ab.ca or by fax 780-422-9690. Final Recommendations will be presented to the Minister in spring 2008.

Industry plays key role in producer survey development
The new year brought with it the approval of funding from the Agricultural Policy Framework to complete a survey of Alberta producers.

In past communiqués, a broad-based producer survey was introduced as a way to hear from producers who are not currently involved in any agricultural organizations. Survey questions are designed to better understand the needs and views of producers across the province. For example some of the topic questions are:

  • How can agricultural organizations strengthen farming businesses?
  • How can greater collaboration be actualized in the industry?
  • What are the most effective ways to access information?
Survey information will be useful for industry and government when considering future activities and resource allocations.

A special thanks to Rick Istead, Diana O’Hara, Tom Jackson, Darcy Fitzgerald, Mike Leslie and several Alberta Agriculture and Food staff for their input into the development of this survey. Each of the 20 Boards and Commissions will also be asked to ensure that the survey questions will result in the information needed to better understand Alberta producers. Ipsos-Reid has been hired to conduct this survey in March and the results are anticipated to be available by the end of April.

New information posted on the website
I encourage you to visit our website (www.agric.gov.ab.ca/marketing_council) and read the summary information from the productive November 23 Working Session. And while you are there, please take a minute to respond to the on-line question regarding funding for industry organizations.

Until next time,
