A brief history of Marketing Council
Established in 1965 by the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act (MAPA), the Alberta Agricultural Products Marketing Council (Marketing Council) is charged with facilitating the establishment and supervising the operations of agricultural marketing boards and commissions.

Currently, there are 20 producer organizations under the Act. The organizational chart below lists those groups and outlines their primary areas of responsibility. Powers of the individual boards and commissions vary according to the needs of the commodity group it serves. Marketing Council also has a liaison role between the province and the National Farm Products Council (NFPC). NFPC oversees the operations of Canadian agricultural agencies with national marketing plans.

How we operate
Four working groups (Supply Managed, Specialty Production, Livestock and Crops) have been established to partner with all boards and commissions. The working groups are made up of three Marketing Council members and two staff members. One Marketing Council member champions each working group.

The purpose of the working group structure is to enable a core team to review and identify potential regulatory amendments, keep abreast of challenges and opportunities facing the industry, identify and discuss potential solutions to problems, and ensure clear and open communication between Marketing Council and the commodity organizations.
