| | Where we are at...
The Industry Governance Review Working Group has met with sixty-two agriculture organizations and will continue consultations with various industry groups throughout the months of October and November. The trip to Eastern Canada provided excellent opportunities to explore and better understand some of the best practices and current approaches to governance issues and challenges that many of those groups are utilizing.
The Industry Governance Review Working Group has worked with the Minister to draft a work plan to the end of March. The plan details key dates and an end date for the Industry Governance Review. One of the first key dates is a Working Session on November 23, 2007 with recognized industry leaders, the Minister, MLAs and Marketing Council.
The purposes of November 23rd Working Session are to:
- Provide an overview of the progress to date
- Confirm effective principles for industry governance
- Recommend solutions and pace of implementation
- Understand the next steps
Where are we going...
The input received from the November 23rd working session will provide Marketing Council with focused input for drafting the initial recommendations for the Minister. The Minister will respond to the draft recommendations and will take his draft to industry for your final comments and input. At this point, the Minister accepts full responsibility for the recommendations. It is his role to take them forward through Cabinet Policy Committee, Caucus and beyond to its readings in the Legislative Assembly. The timeline puts the new legislation in the house in Spring 2009.
To move forward with the balance of identified initiatives, an implementation plan (including resources) will be developed. The implementation process will begin in Spring 2008 and will continue to evolve with input and time.
Survey – Getting Started
Significant progress has been made with the ‘silent majority’ survey. The next step in the survey process is the development of the questions, which will be done in partnership with the industry. Current volunteers from industry who will be helping are Tom Jackson, Henry Vos, Darcy Fitzgerald, Rick Istead and Mike Leslie. It is anticipated that the survey will be conducted in late fall /early winter.
Responding to Industry's Input
Throughout the Industry Governance Review process, input was provided about the current process for selecting members for appointment to Marketing Council. In response to this input, Marketing Council is seeking the Minister's approval to proceed with a new recruiting process which includes identifying required skills sets, engaging youth in leadership opportunities and providing the boards and commissions with an opportunity to have input on the selection of Marketing Council members.
